インテリジェントデザインは"God of the Gaps"によってデザインを検出する
これは詭弁である
ということで、インテリジェントデザイン支持者たちは次の2つの反応を示す
- 「インテリジェントデザインは"God of the Gaps"ではない」と主張する
- 「科学も"Natural Law of the Gaps"だ」と主張する。
ここでは「科学も"Natural Law of the Gaps"だ」を3つ取り上げる。
研究の始まりとCasey Luskinの"Evolution of the Gaps"
「進化したはずだ」を"Evolution of the Gaps"と呼び、インテリジェントデザインの"God of the Gaps"と同じだと、インテリジェントデザインの本山たる

のCasey Luskinから：
SHAPIRO: Both are obviously products of long evolution of preexisting life through the process of trial and error.
CHURCH: But none of us has recreated that any.
SHAPIRO: There must have been much more primitive ways of putting together.
CHURCH: But prove it.
In the end, Robert Shapiro’s statements said it all: We don’t know how the ribosome and its required proteins evolved, but we know that “Both are obviously products of long evolution of preexisting life through the process of trial and error.” This is a prime example of “evolution-of-the-gaps,” and it demonstrates that intelligent design could go a long way towards solving problems in 21st century biology.
SHAPIRO: いずれも明らかに、既存の生命が試行錯誤の過程による長い進化の産物である。
CHURCH: しかし、誰もそれを再現してない。
SHAPIRO: それらを統合するもっと単純な方法があったはずだ。

「科学で説明できないものはデザインだ」と結論するインテリジェントデザインの"God of the Gaps"論法との違いは2点。
- インテリジェントデザインはGapを見つけたらデザインという結論。それに対して、通常科学の手順ではネタの発見、研究の始まり。これはインテリジェントデザイン支持者は自らをSETIになぞらえたときにも見られる違い[

- 共通祖先と進化の概念というハイレベルと、個々の進化メカニズムというロウレベルの違い。"Gap"は個々のロウレベルの理論の修正を迫るが、ハイレベルのモデルの強さには影響することがほとんどない。この点については、

と言う
創造論者Todd Woodによる記述
が適切に指摘しているところ。
そして、オマケとして、Casey Luskinはインテリジェントデザイン"理論"の価値を"Gap"の指摘にあると主張している点。自らは研究しないが研究には貢献するのだと言う。
方法論的自然主義とMichael Egnorの"Materialism of the Gaps"
一方、Discovery Institute公式ブログの執筆者のひとりDr. Michael Egnorは、
方法論的自然主義
（インテリジェントデザイン運動側呼称は"唯物論"）を"Gap"を埋めるものとして持ち出されていると言う。
I must say that I’ve never understood the rhetorical force of the ‘God of the Gaps’ argument. The God of the Gaps sneer is invoked to imply the inexorability of materialism as a complete explanation in natural science. Any critique of materialist dogma in science from a design or immaterial perspective is derided as a 'God of the Gaps' argument. But the real issue is the gaps, which are plentiful and very wide.
Dr. Novella is fond of the God of the Gaps sneer, in the form of "Dualism of the Gaps." I have not met a materialist as supremely confident of the complete explanatory power of materialism as he is. It’s ironic, as Dr. Novella claims the appellation “skeptic,” yet he shows no skepticism for his own materialist dogma.
私が"God of the Gaps"論の修辞の力を理解していないことを言っておく必要がある。"God of the Gaps"という冷笑は、自然科学における完全な説明としての唯物論の冷酷を意味するために挙げられる。デザインあるいは非唯物論的見方から唯物論のドグマを批判する者はだれでも、"God of the Gaps"だと馬鹿にされる。しかし、本当の問題は非常多くて広い"Gap"である。
「Dualism of Gaps"の形式の"God of the Gaps"冷笑をDr. Novellaは好んでいる。彼ほど唯物論の完全な説明力に高い確信を持っている唯物論者に会ったことがない。皮肉なことに、Dr. Novellaは重大な懐疑論を主張しているが、自らの唯物論のドグマに対してはまったく懐疑的でない。
方法論的自然主義(Methodological Naturalism)とは「仮説の説明および検証は自然原因および自然現象によってのみ行われる」という「方法論」であり、科学の原則となっている。ここで「自然」とは「自然法則の逸脱たる超自然ではない」という意味である。インテリジェントデザイン運動では、これを「超自然は存在しない」という形而上学的（存在論的）自然主義と同一視して、唯物論(materialism)と呼ぶ。
Michael Egnorは"God"に対応するものとして、この"唯物論"をあてはめている。そして、「経験的に検証可能なものを対象とする」という"方法"を、「デザインだ」という"結論"と並置することで、それらしく見せてはいる。
でも、これもCasey Luskinと同じで、これから「自然な説明」を探求を始める通常科学と、「デザインだ」で結論するインテリジェントデザインという違うものを並べる行為になっている。
Jonathan Wellsの"Darwin of the gaps"
統一教会信者Jonathan Wellsは、"Darwin of the Gaps"と表現しているが、内容はMichael Egnorの"Materialsim of the Gaps"と同じ。
How ironic. Collins claims he’s basing his case for Darwinism on new knowledge from genome sequencing, but he’s actually basing it on gaps in that knowledge. Collins himself argues that such an approach has “a dismal history.” Advances in science ultimately fill in those gaps, to the dismay of those who had attached their faith to them. Ultimately a “Darwin of the gaps” approach runs a huge risk of simply discrediting science. We must not repeat this mistake in the current era.
なんという皮肉。Collinsはダーウィニズム支持の証拠の基礎としてゲノムシーケンスからの新知識を使っているが、実際にCollinsが基礎としているのは、その知識の"Gap"である。Collins自身がそのようなアプローチは暗い歴史を持つと論じてる。科学の発展は究極的には、それらの信仰をもつ者を狼狽させたGapを埋め尽くす。最終的には「Darwin of the gaps」アプローチは、科学の信用を落とす大きなリスクを冒している。我々は現在の誤りを繰り返してはならない。
Materialism(唯物論)がダーウィニズムに置き換わっているだけで、構造はMichael Egnorと同じ。
基本的には、「創造論は宗教だ」に対抗して「創造論は宗教ではない」や「進化論も宗教だ」と創造論者が主張したのと同じ。
