  1. 生命に使われているアミノ酸は、生命の多くの他の面と同様に、偶然の産物とは考えらにくい。それらは選択過程の結果だと考えられる。単純なペプチド複製系は、最初はランダムに左旋性と右旋性の混合物だったものから、片方の旋性の比率を大きくする[Saghatelian et al. 2001; TSRI 2001]。自己集合や2次元面は、片方の旋回性の比率を大きくする[Zepik et al. 2002]。セリンは、セリンの置換によって同じ旋性のアミノ酸を選択することで、片方の旋回性の安定的なクラスターを形成する。これらのクラスターは、グリセルアルデヒドやグルコースやリン酸などの生物学的に重要な分子を取り込む[Takats et al. 2003]。片方の旋回性に偏ったアミノ酸は、トレオースのような他の有機物の旋回性に偏りをもたらす。それらは、原始生命において重要な要素となる[Pizzarello and Weber 2004]。
  2. 宇宙からのメテオライトの中に見つかるアミノ酸は、生物によって形成されたものではありえないが、左旋性が非常に多く、これは原始太陽系の紫外線の旋回性によるものだと考えられている[Engel and Macko 1997; Cronin and Pizzarello 1999]。ベータ崩壊に関連している弱い核力は、左スピンの電子しか作らない。そして、そのような電子に晒された化学物質は左旋性の結晶を作りやすい[Service 1999]。そのようなメカニズムが、地球上のアミノ酸の左旋性への偏りの原因のひとつかもしれない。
