THE HORSE WHISPERER

Part1

High in the woods that morning, snow covered the ground.
その朝、森の高地は雪が地面を覆っていた。
Into the silence came two horses.
静寂の中に２頭の馬がやってきた。
Their riders were laughing.
馬の乗り手たちは笑っていた。
The older giril, Judith, was leading the way on her horse, Gulliver, and looking back over her shoulder at Grace on Pilgrim.
年上の少女ジュディスはガリバーにまたがり先頭を進み、肩越しにピルグリムに乗っているグレースを振り返って見た。
Grace said, "We may have lost our way."
グレースは言った「私たち道に迷ったかもしれないわ」。
Then they turned to a steep path.
それから彼女らは険しい小道のほうに向きを変えた。
Suddenly, Gulliver's shoe hit ice.
突然、ガリバーの蹄鉄が氷に当たった。
He dropped to his knees and fell back down toward the road, hitting Pilgrim hard.
彼はひざまづき、道路の方に仰向けに倒れ、ピルグリムに激しくぶつかった。
Both horses and their riders landed in the road.
両方の馬と乗り手が道路に落ちた。

Just then, a large truck came round the corner.
ちょうどその時、大きなトラックが角を曲がって走ってきた。
The sound of the horn made Pilgrim go crazy.
クラクションの音がプリグリムを暴れさせた。
He lifted his front legs toward the truck, and grace was thrown onto the road.
彼は両の前足をトラックの方に向かって上げて、グレースは道のほうへ投げ出された。
Grace's father, Robert, found a message on the answering machine, which made him go cold.
グレースの父親であるロバートは留守番電話にメッセージを見つけたが、寒気がした。
Soon after that, he phoned Annie, his wife, at her office.
その後すぐ、彼は会社にいる妻アニーに電話をした。
"Grace is in the hospital. She's very badly hurt. Judith is dead."
「グレースが病院にいる。彼女は大怪我をしている。ジュディスは死んだよ」
When annie arrived at the hospital, Robert said,
アニーが病院に着いたとき、ロバートは言った
"She's going to be al right, but her leg must be taken off."
「彼女は回復するだろうが、左足を切断しなくてはならない」

Part2

Grace came home on Christmas Day short visit from the hospital.
グレースはクリスマスの日に病院から一時帰宅した。
She showed little interest in the hundreds of presents that she received from her friends.
彼女は友達からもらった何百ものプレゼントにはほとんど関心を示さなかった。
The next morning, Robert, Annie, and Grace went to see Pilgrim.
翌朝、ロバートとアニーとグレースは、ピルグリムに会いに行った。
They opened the door of the stable.
彼らは馬小屋の扉を開けた。
“No! Oh, no!” Grace shouted.
「ああ、だめ、だめ」とグレースが叫んだ。
Pilgrim’s eyes were bloody and crazy.
ピルグリムの目は血走り狂っていた。
There were terrible cuts on his face.
顔にはひどい切り傷があった。
Several weeks later, Grace was getting better physically.
数週間後、グレースは肉体的には回復に向かっていた。
She could walk quite well now with the help of her crutches.
今では松葉杖の助けを借りて上手に歩くことが出来た。
But something was wrong inside.
しかし、心のうちでは何かがうまく行かなかった。
Annie could see that something inside her daughter was slowly dying.
アニーには娘の中で何かがゆっくりと死につつあるのがわかった。
“If Pilgrim were all right, he would be a great help to Grace,”
「もしピルグリムが元気なら、あの馬がグレースの大きな助けになるのに」
she said to herself.
と、彼女は心に思った。
Annie looked for someone to calm Pilgrim’s troubled heart.
アニーはピルグリムのおかしくなった心を静めることが出来る人を探した。
One day, she heard of Tom Booker, a horse whisperer in Montana.
ある日、彼女はモンタナに住む「ホース・ウィスパー」のトム・ブッカーのことを聞いた。
Horse whisperer can understand horses.
ホース・ウィスパーは馬が理解できるのだ。
They can calm the most troubled horses just by talking to them.
彼らは馬に話しかけるだけで、たいていの問題のある馬を鎮めることができるのだ。

Part3

Tom Booker could see how much Grace and Pilgrim were joined in their suffering.
トム・ブッカーは、グレースとピルグリムがどれだけ苦しみの中で繋がれているのかがわ
かった。
"If I could help the horse, I could also help Grace,” he thought.
「自分が馬を助けられれば、グレースを助けることが出来るだろう」と彼は思った。
Tom decided to do something for them.
彼は彼らのために何かをする決心をした。
Day after day, he stayed with Pilgrim in the arena for some time.
来る日も来る日も、彼はアリーナでしばらくの時間をピルグリムと一緒に過ごした。
Weeks passed, but nothing changed.
何週かが過ぎたが、何も変わらなかった。
When Tom came near Pilgrim, the horse always moved away to a far corner.
トムが馬に近付くと、馬はいつも遠くの隅に離れて行った。
One day, however, little by little Pilgrim came to Tom.
しかしある日、少しずつピルグリムが彼に近付いて来た。
Tom was whispering something to Pilgrim.
トムはピルグリムに何かを囁いていた。
“Go on, Pilgrim. He won’t hurt you,”
「さあ行って、ピルグリム。彼はあなたを傷つけたりしないわ」
Grace thought.
とグレースは思った。
Pilgrim put his nose to Tom’s hands and smelled them.
ピルグリムは鼻先をトムの手に乗せてその匂いをかいだ。
Tom just stood there and let him.
トムはただそこに立ったまま、したいようにさせた。
At then moment, Grace was all happiness.
その瞬間、グレースはまさに幸福だった。
Pilgrim’s show of trust changed everything.
ピルグリムの信頼している様子が全てを変えた。
She knew that this change in herself was going to stay with her forever.
彼女は、今この内なる変化は永久に自分の中にとどまる物だということがわかった。
Tom called Grace into the arena.
トムはグレースをアリーナの中に呼んだ。
She held her hands out below the horse’s nose.
彼女は馬の鼻の下に手を差し出した。
There was fear on both sides.
両者ともに恐れがあった。
Then Pilgrim put his nose to her hands and then to her face and hair.
それから、ピルグリムは鼻先を彼女の手につけて、それから彼女の顔と髪につけた。

Part4

A few weeks later, everyone Grace knew was there, at the side of the arena.
数週間後に、グレースの知っている全員がアリーナの横にいた。
They were waiting to see Grace ride on Pilgrim again.
彼らはグレースが再びピルグリムに乗るのを見るのを待っていた。
Tom rode Pilgrim slowly around the arena a few times.
トムがピルグリムを乗ってアリーナの周りをゆっくりと歩いた。
Grace stood next to her mother.
グレースは母の横に立っていた。
She tried to stay calm.
彼女は落ち着こうとしていた。
Then Tom got down from Pilgrim and walked over to Grace.
それからトムがピルグリムから降りて、グレースのほうに歩いてきた。
She went to meet him.
彼女は彼を迎えに行った。
Her new leg felt good.
彼女の新しい足は感じよく合っていた。
“Ready?” he asked.
「用意はいいかい？」と彼は聞いた。
He saw the worry in her face.
彼は彼女の顔に不安を見た。
“Sure."
「ええ、もちろん」
Tom put his arm around her shoulders, and they walked over to Pilgrim.
トムは彼女の肩に手をかけ、彼らはピルグリムのほうに歩いていった。
He lifted his ears when they came near.
彼らが近付くと馬は耳を上げた。
Tom stopped Grace a little way away from Pilgrim and went the final few steps alone.
トムはピルグリムから少し離れたところでグレースを立ち止まらせると、自分一人で最後の数歩を歩いた。
He put his hand on Pilgrim’s neck and his head close to the horse’s.
彼は手をピルグリムの首に乗せ、自分の頭を馬の頭に近づけた。
Pilgrim never took his eyes off Grace.
ピルグリムは決してグレースから視線を離さなかった。
When Tom tried to bring the animal to Grace, Pilgrim refused to move.
トムが動物をグレースのほうに連れてこようとした時、ピルグリムは動くことを拒絶した。
He lifted his head and looked down at Grace.
彼は頭を上げて、グレースを見下ろした。
He must have remembered that terrible moment of the accident.
彼はあの事故の恐ろしい瞬間を思い出したていたに違いない。

Part5

“OK, Grace,” Tom said.
「よし、グレース」とトムは言った。
“We’re going to try one more thing.
「私たちはさらにもう一つのことをしてみる。
I didn’t want to do this.
これはしたくはなかったんだが。
But there’s something inside that horse that I can’t reach in any other way.
しかし、あの馬の中には他の方法では届かない何かがあるんだ。
I’m going to make him lie down.”
私は馬を横にしてみる」
Pilgrim fought long and hard.
ピルグリムは長く激しく戦った。
But finally he fell over on his side and laid his head on the sand.
しかし、最後に脇を下にして寝ころび頭を砂の上に乗せた。
“Now, Grace, step up.Go on, step up in him,” Tom almost shouted.
「さあ、グレース、こっちへ来て。彼の上に乗って」トムはほとんど叫んでいた。
And she did.
彼女は従った。
With tears falling down her face, she stood on the animal she loved most in the world.
彼女は顔に涙を流しながら、世界一愛している動物の上に立った。
Tom helped Grace down and put his hands on her shoulders.
トムはグレースがしゃがむのを手伝い、両手を彼女の肩に乗せた。
He said, “Lying down like that was the worst thing for Pilgrim.
彼は言った「こんなふうに横になるのはピルグリムにとって最悪のことだった。
But he found it was OK.
でも、大丈夫だとわかったんだ。
Even you standing on him was OK.
あなたが彼の上に立っても大丈夫だった。
Now he know that the light comes only after the darkest hour.”
いま彼は夜明けは一番暗い時間の後にだけ来ることを知ったんだ」
Now Tom prepared the horse for riding and told Grace to get on.
いまや、トムは馬に乗馬の準備をしてグレースに乗るように言った。
She felt no fear.
彼女は恐怖は感じなかった。
She walked him first one way around the arena and then the other.
彼女はまず調教場をゆっくり一周して、さらに一周した。
Grace could feel Pilgrim under her, just like before.
グレースは以前と同じように自分の下にピルグリムを感じた。
He was strong, trusting, and true.
彼は力強く、信頼してくれていて、誠実だった。
