天動説を支持したキリスト教徒たち
Martin Luther[1483 - 1546]とJohn Calvin[1509-1564]がNicolaus Copernicus[1473-1543]の天体の回転について[1543]を聖書に反すると批判していたことは、よく知られていることである。たとえば、Calvinは次のように述べている。
Those who assert that 'the earth moves and turns'...[are] motivated by 'a spirit of bitterness, contradiction, and faultfinding;' possessed by the devil, they aimed 'to pervert the order of nature.'
地球が動いていて回転していると主張する者たちは、悪魔に支配されて、皮肉と矛盾とあらさがしの精神に動機づけられている。彼らは自然の摂理を曲解しようとしている。

The heavens revolve daily, and, immense as is their fabric, and inconceivable the rapidity of their revolutions, we experience no concussion -- no disturbance in the harmony of their motion. The sun, though varying its course every diurnal revolution, returns annually to the same point. The planets, in all their wandering, maintain their respective positions. How could the earth hang suspended in the air were it not upheld by God's hand? (Job 26:7) By what means could it [the earth] maintain itself unmoved, while the heavens above are in constant rapid motion, did not its Divine Maker fix and establish it?
天空は毎日回転し、大空は巨大で、思いのほか高速に回っているが、我々は震動を感じることはなく、運動の調和に乱れはない。太陽は回転するごとに軌道を変えるが、1年で同じ場所に帰ってくる。惑星たちはそれぞれの位置を維持している。神の手によって支えられないなら、どうやって地球は大地を空虚の上につるされうるだろうか(ヨブ記26章7節)。神がこれをとどめておかないなら、どうやって、天空が一定速度で回転し、地球が不動であり続けられるだろうか。

また、反ユダヤ主義でも有名なMartin Lutherも強く地動説を批判していた：
Scripture simply says that the moon, the sun, and the stars were placed in the firmament of the heaven, below and above which heaven are the waters... It is likely that the stars are fastened to the firmament like globes of fire, to shed light at night... We Christians must be different from the philosophers in the way we think about the causes of things. And if some are beyond our comprehension like those before us concerning the waters above the heavens, we must believe them rather than wickedly deny them or presumptuously interpret them in conformity with our understanding.
聖書には、大空の下と大空の上の水の間に、月と太陽と星々が置かれたと書かれている。星々は夜を照らすために、火球のように大空に固定された。我々キリスト教徒は、物事の原因についての考え方を哲学者とは違うものにしなければならない。天上の水のように我々の理解を超えたものがあるなら、我々はそれを意地悪く否定したり、我々の理解と合うように無理に解釈するのではなく、それをそのまま信じなければならない。

People gave ear to an upstart astrologer who strove to show that the earth revolves, not the heavens or the firmament, the sun and the moon. Whoever wishes to appear clever must devise some new system, which of all systems is of course the very best. This fool [or 'man'] wishes to reverse the entire science of astronomy; but sacred Scripture tells us that Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, and not the earth.
人々は、天空や大空や太陽や月ではなく、地球が回転していることを示そうとした成り金のような占星術師の言葉を聞いた。自分を賢く見せようとするものは誰でも、何らかの新しい体系をつくりだす。もちろん、それは最善なものでなければならない。この馬鹿者は天文学を完全にひっくり返そうとしている。しかし。聖書は我々に、ヨシュアが地球ではなく太陽にとどまるよう命じたと告げている。
もちろん、LutherやCalvinが地動説を受け入れなかったこと自体は、Galileo Galilei[1564-1642]が天文対話[1632]を出すよりも、一世紀前であり、特に奇異なことではない。
「聖書を掲げて物を言っても、なんの根拠にもならない」ことを示す無数の実例の山に、ささやか貢献をしただけである。
