  1. この主張は "argument from incredulity"(疑いからの論) の例である。複雑な本能へとつながる要因を思いつかないことが、そのような要因が存在しないことを意味しない。
  2. すべての本能が複雑なわけではない。たとえば、恐怖症は、突然の大きな音のような単純な刺激に対する基本的な感情の反応以上のものではない。また、複雑な本能が漸進的に発達することを妨げるものはない。たとえば、幾つかのハチは巣で花の種類のみの情報を交換する[Dornhaus and Chittka 1999]。複雑な本能は、このような小さな段階を経て発達する。
