Evolution does not explain religion.
進化論は宗教を説明できない

Response:

1. 宗教は問題なく進化論に適合している。宗教の重要な要素のいくつかは人間以前から存在している。たとえば：
   • 死への恐怖は明らかに生存に有利であり、感情と同じくらい古くからあるだろう。イマジネーションが可能になるところまで知性が進化すれば、我々は代替案について考え始められるだろう。
   • 人間および他の霊長類は社会階層構造の中で生きている。社会構造の中の"高い存在"と"低い存在"という認識は遺伝子的も部分的に担われている。我々は他の動物を低い存在だと考えている。しかし、ときとして、高い存在は何か明白でないものを必要とする。
   • 言語が必要とする、シンボル思考の出現とともに、より特定の用語を使って抽象的な高次の存在を考えることを可能となる。
   • 言語の出現とともに、神について話せるようになる。そこからは文化進化を経て宗教が発展する。
   • 未知なるものへの恐怖は神を信じる、さらなる理由となる。生贄をささげたり、"intercessory prayer"を捧げたりして神と関係を持つことにより、自分がコントロールできない事象に何らかの影響を与えられるという思いを持つことができる。
2. 宗教自体が進化している[Cullen 1998; Gottsch 2001]。
3. この論は "Argument from incredulity"(疑いからの論) である。何かを説明する方法が知られていないことは、説明不可能であることを意味しない。
