The Origin of Species does not deliver on the promise of its title; it does not address speciation.
"種の起源"は表題の約束を果たしていない。種形成を説明していない。

  1. 生物学はダーウィンで止まったわけではない。この問題について多くのことがわかってきた。
  2. ダーウィンは長々と、いかに種がその形態を漸進的に、しかし長期間ではドラスティックに変化させるかを説明した。たとえ新たな種がそのリネージュから分岐しなくても、多くの人々は、その過程は新たな種の起源だと考えただろう。
  3. ダーウィンは自然選択が種形成の根本的役割を持っていると提唱したが、メカニズムについて詳細を述べていない。現在は、大半の種形成は、自然選択ではなく、地理的隔離や遺伝的浮動(異所的種分化)によるものだと考えられている。しかし、自然選択はそれでも、異なるホストへの特殊化による種形成などでは役割を果たす[Filchak et al. 2000]。そして、自然選択は最初の種からの多様化を駆動する[Presgraves et al. 2003]。
  4. ダーウィンは地理的隔離など種形成について、別の著作で書いている[Kottler 1978]。
