- 種はファジーで、あいまいな境界線を持つ。というのは、進化が進行中だからである。ある種は形成過程にある。また、ある種は最近形成され、いまだ解釈が難しい。生物学の複雑さがさらに混乱を増す。多くの場合、2つの種の間に少数の交雑があるとしても、明瞭に種を区別できる。無性生殖する生物あるいは無性生殖で子孫を残す可能性のある生物もあり、生物にどれだけの種があるのかは問題をはらんでいる。
一度で最後の創造で創られた種類として定義される創造では、すべての種が明確に区別され、種類あるいは種の一般的な定義が存在するはずだ。それがないのだから、進化論ではなく創造論には、何らかの説明が必要だ。
- 種は異なるもう敵のために異なる定義がなされている。種の概念には、同定と分類のための分類学の単位という意味と、モデリングと説明のための理論的概念としての意味の2つがある。これら2つの目的には大きな重なりがある。しかし、ある目的のための定義は、別の目的のためにベストだとは限らない。同様に異なる種基準を要求する実際的な考慮点がある。化石に適用される種の定義は、化石化されない特徴である遺伝子や振る舞いには基づけない。
