Stanley Miller's original abiogenesis experiment produced only four of the twenty amino acids from which proteins are built, and later experiments still have not produced all twenty amino acids under plausible conditions.

- Millerの実験では生命に必要な20種類のアミノ酸のうち13種類を生成した[Henahan 1996]。それ以外のアミノ酸は別のメカニズムで生成されたかもしれない。たとえば、宇宙空間で生成された隕石で地上に運ばれたかもしれない[Pizzarello and Weber 2004]。
- 大半の原始生命に必要なアミノ酸はわかっていない。容易に生成されるアミノ酸だけで十分であり、生命が後に他のアミノ酸を生成するように進化し、それらを使うようになったかもしれない。
