Successful production of a 200-component functioning organism requires at least 200 beneficial mutations. The odds of getting that many successive beneficial mutations is r<sup>200</sup>, where r is the rate of beneficial mutations. Even if r is 0.5 (and it is really much smaller), that makes the odds worse than 1 in 10<sup>60</sup>, which is impossibly small.

+Morrisの計算は、すべての有益な突然変異が連続的に起きて、その間に他の突然変異が起きないと仮定している。有害な突然変異が淘汰されるとするなら、200個の有益な突然変異は急速に蓄積する。Morrisのモデルの仮定では200/r世代である。(現実にはもっと複雑だ。特に、大きな集団では生殖による遺伝子の再結合により、突然変異の蓄積はもっと速くなる。
