Response:

1. この主張はまったくの間違い。Beheが文献がないと言っている分野には数十の論文がある。たとえば、 David Usseryは繊毛の進化について107本、鞭毛の進化について125本、血液凝固系の進化について27本、小胞輸送の進化について130本、免疫系の分子進化について84本の論文を見つけている(Ussery 1999)。
2. Beheはこの主張を印象付けるために、細胞の分子の働きについて我々の理解を誇張している。たとえば、Beheは「過去40年に、現代生化学は細胞の秘密を明らかにした(1996, 232). 」と書いている。しかし、我々の理解は始まったばかりだ。Beheがその本を書いてから数年、幾千の研究論文が新たな情報を明らかにしてきたが、多くはまだ明らかではない。完全なE- coliのゲノムが解析されたのは1998年であり、1/3の遺伝子の機能は明らかではない。そして、E-coliは人間の細胞よりも単純である。
