Since the early atmosphere had no ozone layer, ultraviolet (UV) light would have irradiated organic molecules that formed in the atmosphere, destroying complex molecules.

  1. 単純な有機分子が、ダストや氷粒などのように多く集まると、紫外線は実際に、幾つかの化学結合を切断し、再結合を促すことで、より複雑な分子の形成を推進することがある。[Bernstein et al. 1999; Cooper et al. 2001]。DNAとRNAは比較的、紫外線に抵抗力がある。というのは、これらの分子のある部分が、別の部分の保護する形になり、塩基へのダメージがバックボーンを修復する物質の供給源となるからである。紫外線は核酸を選択的に発展させ、実際に生命の自然発生に不可欠な要素なったいたかもしれない[Mulkidjanian et al. 2003; Mullen 2003]。
