Arkansas' anti-evolution act bars dictionary, state official claims
Little Rock, Ark, Nov, 14 -- (UP)-- Arkansas' recently enacted anti-evolution act took a new turn when J.P. Womack, state superintendent of public instruction, intimated that the monkey in the case may develop into a white elephant.
Under a strict enforcement of the law. which prohibits the teaching of evolution in state educational institutions, Womack ruled that Webster's International Dictionary, the reference "world book," and the Encyclopedia Britannica are "bootleg books."
And these books, considered safe, readable books in universities all over the country, are not to be permitted to "pollute" the minds of Arkansas students, according to the ruling of Womack.
"I am in favor of the strictest enforcement of the anti-evolution law," Womack said in bringing comfort to the fundamentalists who have been active in having the state approve at a referendum, but his qualifications made the opponents of the law rejoice.
"By strict enforcement only can we hope to secure a repeal of the measure," he declared. "Law enforcement would result in the law remaining on the books to be used only when some person desires to invoke it against it certain teachers."
