  1. カンブリア爆発は、5億4000万年前に、多様な複雑な動物が突如として出現したように見えるが、複雑な生命の起源ではない。多細胞生物の証拠は5億9000万年前~5億6000万年前の中国のドウシャンツオ累層(Doushantuo Formation)で見つかっており[Chen et al. 2000, 2004]、5億5500万年前の多様な化石が見つかっている[Martin et al. 2000]。(カンブリア紀は5億4300万年前に始まり、カンブリア爆発は最初の三葉虫の出現した5億3000万年前に始まったと考えられている。)有殻アメーバ(Testate amoebae)は7億5000万年前に出現したことが知られている[Porter and Knoll 2000]。豪州のStirling Range Formationからは12億年前の痕跡化石が見つかっている[Rasmussen et al. 2002]。(比較的複雑な細胞である)真核生物は、化石の化学的証拠から27億年前に出現したと考えられている[Brocks et al. 1999]。ストロマトライトは細菌が34億3000万年前に存在していた証拠である[Allwood et al. 2006]。化石微生物は34億65000万年前と思われるものが見つかっている[Schopf 1993]。34億7000万年前の硫黄分解細菌の同位体証拠があり[Shen et al. 2001]、34億8000万年前の火山性ガラスの微生物エッチングの証拠と思われるものがある[Furnes et al. 2004]。

    動物といえども、カンブリア紀にすべての種類が出現したわけではない。刺胞動物や海綿動物や、おそらく他の門もカンブリア紀以前に出現している。分子証拠は、少なくとも6つの動物門が先カンブリア紀に出現したことを示している[Wang et al. 1999]。苔虫類はオルドヴィス紀に最初に出現した。多くの他の軟体動物門は、はるか後まで化石記録に登場しない。カンブリア紀に多くの新たな動物形態が出現したが、すべてが出現したわけではない。ある文献[Collins 1994]によれば、32の後生動物門のうち11がカンブリア紀に出現したが、ひとつは先カンブリア紀に、8つがカンブリア紀の後に、12が化石記録がない。

    そして、それは門についてである。人々がグループだと考える、哺乳類や爬虫類や鳥類や昆虫や蜘蛛のようなものは、どれもカンブリア紀に出現していない。カンブリア紀に出現した魚類は、今日の魚類のような形状をしていない。

  4. カンブリア爆発の期間は曖昧で不確かだが、500~1000万年間が合理的な推定である。5億5300万年前に始まり、4000万年以上続いたという者もいる。推定最短でも500万年であり、突如とは言えない。

  5. 何故、多様化が比較的突如起きた尤もらしい説明がある。
    • 先カンブリア紀後期の能動的捕食者の進化は、他の動物のハードな部品の共進化を加速した。これらのハードな部品により、それまでの軟体動物よりも化石化しやすくなり、多くの化石が残されたが、それは必ずしも多くの動物を意味しない。
    • 初期の複雑な動物は顕微鏡サイズだったかもしれない。カンブリア紀よりも5500万年前の中国のドウシャンツオ累層からは0.2mm以下の動物化石と見られるものが見つかっている[Chen et al. 2004]。初期の進化の多くは、目に見えないほど小さいものかもしれない。
    • 地球はカンブリア紀の始まりに、全球氷河期が終った[Hoffman 1998; Kerr 2000]。カンブリア爆発の前のスノーボールアースは複雑さの発達を妨げ、あるいは個体数を制限して、化石が今日に残るには少なすぎる数にしたかもしれない。スノーボールアースの後の生命に適した環境で、進化が起きる新たなニッチが開かれた。
    • 動物の基本的ボディプランの多くを制御するHox genesは、最初に進化したようである。これらの遺伝子の発達は、多様化するボディプランの標準物質を存在可能にしたかもしれない[Carroll 1997]。
    • 大気の酸素はカンブリア紀の始めに増加した[Canfield and Teske 1996; Logan et al. 1995; Thomas 1997]。
