For years, evolutionists have hailed the chimpanzee as "our closest living relative" and have pointed out that the DNA is 98 to 99 percent identical between the two. Scientists now say the difference is 4 percent, double what they have been claiming for years.

  1. チンパンジーとヒトの違いは、 単一ヌクレオチドの置換により生じるDNA連鎖の変質が平均1.23%で、ううち1.06%以下が固定的な種の差異によるもので、残りがチンパンジー集団内及びヒト集団内の生物多形性によるものである。挿入及び欠失(indel)による、約3%のチンパンジーとヒトのゲノムシーケンス違いがあるが、挿入欠失は典型的には複数のヌクレオチドが菅家シテイル。挿入欠失によるゲノム変化の数は、単一ヌクレオチドの置換の数の一部である(約35万に対して約5万)。したがって、ヒトとチンパンジーの差異を98-99%と言うことはまったく適切である[Chimpanzee Sequencing 2005]。

  2. 違いの計測は、何を測っているかに依存する。もし、2つの種の全タンパク質について、同一であるタンパク質の数を計測するなら、ヒトとチンパンジーは29%一致する[Chimpanzee Sequencing 2005]。もし、タンパク質をコーディングしている領域での、同義でない塩基のペアの違いなら、ヒトとチンパンジーは99.75%一致する[Chimpanzee Sequencing 2005, fig. 9]。もともとの98.4%は、 DNAハイブリダイゼーション実験の結果から推定されたもので、これは(間接的にDNA融解温度を経由した)ゲノムの、交雑可能に類似していて、かつ反復部分を削除した、短い断片のシーケンスの差異を測定したものである[Sibley and Ahlquist 1987]。いかなる測定方法を用いても、ヒトに最も近い種はチンパンジー(チンパンジーの姉妹種であるボノボを含む)である。

    進化はゲノム全体にわたって一様に起きるものではないので、ゲノムの一部を検討対象とした場合、ヒトとチンパンジーの差異は異なる結果を出すことになりうる[Britten 2002, Chen et al. 2001]。
