Claim CB601.2.1:
Melanic moths never completely replaced non-melanic ones in heavily polluted areas such as Manchester. This is inconsistent with the theory that visually selective predation was responsible for their increase in numbers.

Response:
1. 視覚選択以外の要因も頻度に影響する。これら他の要因、特に移動は、明色の蛾が重度汚染工業地域の明色の蛾の頻度を説明する。

この主張はHaldane[1956]の計算に基づいている。Haldaneは自然選択の"crude 2-allele"モデルとKettelewell[1956]の集めたデータを使って、明色の蛾の比率が5%を下回るまでに要する時間を推定した。このモデルは明色と暗色の蛾の間の相対選択の強さだけが頻度の変化に影響すると仮定している。Kettlewellのデータが示した選択の強さから、Haldaneは明色の蛾の比率が30~40年で5%を下回ることを見出した。しかし、Kettlewellの野生の蛾の約10%は明色であり、Kettlewellが集めた数から、この差異は統計的に有意だった。さらに、Kettlewellがデータを集めたBirmingham近くの条件は。過去40年以上にわたって暗色の蛾を選好してきた。

Haldaneは、Kettlewellのデータが示すよりも局所的な選択の強さがずっと弱いか、それが明色と暗色の蛾の相対比率に影響する唯一の要因ではないかのいずれかだと結論した。彼は二つの可能性を提唱した。ひとつは汚染されていない地域の遺伝子流動で、これは重要ではないと彼は棄却した。もうひとつはヘテロジニアス優位である。ヘテロジニアス優位仮説を支持する証拠もせいぜい同程度のものだった[Creed et al. 1980, 258ff; Bishop et al. 1978, 507ff]。しかし、遺伝子リュ動画Haldaneが考えたよりも重要であることを示す証拠が、彼が計算を行って以降に、着々と積み上げられていった。

まず、Kettlewell [1958, 60]とBishop[1972, 222ff]は、雄のオオシモフリエダシャクが毎日かなりの距離を移動可能であることを発見した。Cook and Mani [1980]は移動と選択の両方の効果を組み込んだ数理モデルを作り上げた。このモデルによって、重度汚染地域に生息を続ける明色の蛾の比率を説明できたが、まだ説明のつかない蛾の分布の特徴があった。しかし、モデルに組み込む視覚以外の選択の効果によって、これらの特性が説明がつくことをMani[1982]が発見した。( CB601.2.2 参照)

これらのモデルの発展は、オオシモフリエダシャクの変種の間の相対頻度を決定するのに視覚選択捕食が重要であることに疑いをさしはさむものではない。事実、Mani and Cookの成功したモデルは、強い視覚選択とフィールドデータから推定される強さを組み込んでいる。

2. Manchesterは、この主張の証拠として引用するには特に良くない選択である。20世紀初頭と1960年代半ばの間でManchesterで採集されたオオシモフリエダシャクの数についての公表データは、Michaelisのものだけである。これはKettlewell[1958, 1965, as cited by Askew et al. 1971, 251]によって最初に発表された。Michaelisが1952~1964年に採集した760匹のオオシモフリエダシャクのどれひとつ典型的な明色ではなかった。

Michaelisが採集した蛾のうち11匹(ie. 1.4%)が暗色のcarbonariaではなかったが、それより少し明色のinsulariaだった。しかし、使えるデータから、Haldaneのモデルは1950年代のManchesterにおけるinsulariaの頻度について、有意味な推定が可能なモデルではなかった。それから結論できたことは、もしManchesterの条件が、基礎となる仮定を満たしているなら、典型的な明色の蛾の比率は非常に小さくなっているはずだというものである。しかし、それはまさに観察されたことである。
