GREENING MOVEMENTS AROUND THE WORLD



Pert1

In 1954,Jean Giono,a French writer,wrote a story about an elderly man.
1954年、フランスの作家であるジャン・ジオノは、一人の年老いた男に関する物語を書きました。


In the story,the man plants 100,000 acorns in a large barren area.
その物語の中で、彼は荒廃した広大な土地に100000のどんぐりを植えました。
Over time,the acorns grow into big oak trees,making a beautiful forest.
やがて、そのどんぐりは森を綺麗にしながら、大きいナラの木のほどに生長します。
Water flows in brooks again,and birds and small animals return.
小川に再び水が流れると、鳥たちや小さな動物たちが戻ってきます。
People come back to enjoy the beauty,too.
人々もその美しさを楽しむために戻ってきます。
The story is easy to read and is loved all over the world.
物語は読みやすく、世界中で愛されています。
It tells us how important planting tree is.
この物語は我々に植林活動がどれだけ重要なことであるかを伝えています。



Forests work as "lungs" of the earth,taking in CO2 and giving off O2.
森は地球の肺のように働いており、二酸化炭素を取り込み酸素を放出しています。
To our regret,however,more than 50 percent of the forests in the world disappeared during the last century.
しかし、残念なことに前世紀(20世紀)の間に、森の50%以上が姿を消してしまいました。

One day in 1985,Omar Castillo,a Mexican boy,learned that the rain forests in southern Mexico were disappearing.
1985年のある日、メキシコ人の少年オマール・カスティーロは、メキシコの南にある熱帯雨林が姿を消しつつあることを知った。
In order to see the destruction of the forests with his own eyes,he walked 1,400 kilometers from Mexico City down to the rain forests.
森林破壊を彼自身の目で見るために、彼はメキシコの町から熱帯雨林までの1400キロを歩いて南下しました。
Omar was very sad that most of the rain forests were now ranches.
オマールは熱帯雨林のほとんどが牧場になっていたことをとても悲しみました。
He asked the President to stop cutting them down.

In 1987,this story was published in Sweden.
1987年、この話はスウェーデンに出版されました。
It moved Swedeish children to help protect rain forests.

They started a campaign to buy part of a rain forest in Central America.
彼らは中央アメリカの熱帯雨林の一部を買い取るキャンペーンを始めました。
Within two years,their initial six-hectare purchase grew to more than 7,000 hectares.

Today,people in Britain,Germany,Canada,the U.S.,and Japan are members of this campaign.

The Oze Wetlands are famous for their rich biodiversity.
尾瀬湿地帯はその豊富な生態系で有名です。
Now the wetland area is on the Ramser site list.
現在、尾瀬湿地帯はラムサール条約に登録されています。
That means its nature should be kept intact.
それは、その自然が保護されるべきであることを意味しています。



However,it is a real effort to preserve the environment of the wetlands.
しかし、尾瀬湿地帯の環境を守ることは本当に努力がいることです。
Since millions of people visit there every year,boardwalks,visitors' centers,and comfort stations have to be built and maintained.
それゆえ、毎年訪れる人々の多くや、木道、観光センター、公衆トイレが建てられて、管理されなくてはならなりません。
Many volunteers,including Oze High School sutudents,take part in the work.
たくさんのボランティアの人々が尾瀬高校の生徒たちと共にその仕事の一部をこなします。



The students know that it is also important to protect the forests surrounding the wetlands.
生徒たちは湿地帯の周辺を守ることもまた重要であるということを知っています。
The forests play the role of a barrier against the increasing numbers of hikers and wild animals.
森は増え続ける訪問者や野生動物に対するバリアの役割を担っています。
Actually,the students have been plating beech trees in the forests for years.
実は、生徒たちは数年間森に椰子の木を植え続けています。
One of the students says,
ある生徒の一人はこう言います。
"I'm sure it's our responsibility to keep nature as it is."
"私はこのまま自然を守ることが私たちの責任だと確信しています"

In 1997, Wangari Maathai began a movement to save Africa's forests by planting seven trees in her yard.
1997年、ワンガリマータイは庭に7本の木を植えることによってアフリカの森を救うため運動を始めた。
Maathai formed a women's group, and little by little they planted trees across Kenya and other African countries.
マータイは女性の団体を結成し、そして少しずつ彼らはケニヤや他のアフリカの国々にわたって木を植えました。
The movement was difficult to continue, but Maathai was sure it would help the environment.
この運動を続けることは難しかったが、マータイさんは、環境に役立つだろうと確信していた。
Now, it is called "The Green Belt Movement."
いま、この運動は"グリーンベルト運動"と呼ばれています。
It has grown into the largest tree-planting project in Africa.
この運動はアフリカで最も大きい植樹プロジェクトになりました。



On December 10, 2004, Maathai was awarded the Novel Peace Prize for her tree-planting efforts.
2004年12月10日、マータイは植樹への取り組みによってノーベル平和賞を授与された。
For the first time in history, environmental work was rewarded with the Peace Prize.
歴史上初めて、環境研究は平和賞によって報われた。



How is protecting the environment related to peace?

"The environment is very important for world peace.
環境は世界平和のため非常に大切なことです。
When we destroy our resources and our resources become scarce, we fight to get them,"
