UNDER THE ATOMIC CLOUD by Nagai Kayano


Part1

I saw the atomic bomb explode.
私は、原子爆弾が爆発するのを見ました。
It happened when I was only four years old.
私がたった4歳のとき、それは起こりました。
Nothing dreadful has happened to me since then.
そのとき以来、恐ろしいことは私には起きていません。
But I have never been happy, because Mommy was killed in the explosion.
しかし、私は今まで一度も幸せになりませんでした。なぜなら母が爆発によって死んだからです。
I remember those terrible days.
私は、それらの恐ろしい日々を覚えています。
We lived in Urakami in Nagasaki and had airraids every day.
私たちは、は長崎の浦上に住んでいて、毎日、空襲がありました。
When the sirens began to blow, Mommy helped me put on my air-raid cap.
サイレンが鳴り始めたとき、母は防空頭巾を私につけるのを手伝いました。
She put a knapsack on my back and took me to the air-raid shelter.
彼女は背にナップザックを背負い、私を防空壕まで連れて行きました。
The shelter, which I always found dark and damp, was very small and full of mosquitoes.
その防空壕はいつも暗くてじめじめしていて、非常に小さく蚊でいっぱいでした。
I could not play house there.
私は家で遊ぶことができませんでした。
But I was happy because Mommy held me tight during the terrible times.
しかし、私は、幸せでした。なぜなら母が恐ろしい時間の間私をしっかりと抱きかかえていたからです。
At other times, she was too busy.
それ以外のときは、彼女はとても忙しかった。
Lots of bombs fell near our house, so Daddy and Mommy decided to send Makoto, my brother, and me to Koba.
多くの爆弾が家の近くに落ちたので、父と母は兄弟である誠と私を木場に送ることを決めました。
My grandma lived there.
私の祖母はそこに住んでいました。
Her house was on a hill.
彼女の家は丘に建っていました。
On August 5, Mommy took us there and left us with my grandma.
8月5日に、母は私たちをそこへ連れてきて、祖母に私たちを預けました。

Part2

On August 8th, Mom came to see us.
8月8日、母は、私たちに会いにきました。
She brought me the mompe she had just made for me.
彼女は、彼女が私のためにちょうど作ってくれたもんぺを持ってきてくれました。
Suddenly we heard the air-raid sirens.
突然、私たちは空襲警報を聞きました。
Mom hurried back to Urakami to see if everything was all right.

Before she ran down the hill, she patted me on the head a and promised, "Next time I'll bring tempura and manju."
彼女が丘を下る前に、私の頭をぽんぽんと叩き、約束した。「次のときは、てんぷらと饅頭を持ってくるつもりだからね。」
The next morning I missed Mom, and so did Makoto.
翌朝、私は母がいなくてさびしくて、誠も同じでした。
We decided to go to Urakami.
私たちは浦上へ行くのを決めました。
We were just going out.
私たちはちょうど外へ出かけていました。
Then the air raid sirens started again.
そのとき、空襲警報が再び始まりました。
Soon we heard the sound of a plane.
すぐ、私たちは、飛行機の音を聞きました。
We were very disappointed because we had to give up going to Urakami.
私たちはがっかりしました。なぜなら浦上へ行くのをやめなければならなかったからです。
Cicadas were making a lot of noise.
せみは大きな鳴き声を出していました。
Suddenly there was a great big flash.
突然、大きな閃光がありました。
It was like lightning.
それは稲妻に似ていました。
I didn't know what it was.
私にはそれが何か分かりませんでした。
There was a big noise, then came a strong wind, which almost blew me over.
とてもうるさく、強い風が来て、ほとんど私を吹き飛ばしました。
I lay down on my face and stayed there with my hands over my ears.
私は、うつぶせに倒れ、両手で両耳をふさいで縮こまりました。
After a while, I took my hands away from my ears.
しばらくして、私は耳から手をとりました。
I couldn't hear the cicadas.
私はせみの声を聞くことができませんでした。
They weren't singing anymore.
彼らは誰も歌っていませんでした。
I opend my eyes and got up.
私は目を開け、立ちました。
Oh, my!

What a terrible sight!
なんてひどい光景だ!

Part3

From the other side of the big green mountain, a great red pillar was sticking up into the sky.
大きな緑の山の反対側から、大きな赤い柱が空へ立ち上っていました。
It was a big, big pillar of fire.
それは、おおきな、おおきな炎の柱でした。
The top of it was like a morning glory.
その先は、あさがおに似ていました。
Swelling and swelling, it went up and up, higher and higher, like smoke from a chimney, all the way up to the sky.
どんどん膨れながら、それは、空いっぱいに、煙突のように、高く高く上っていた。
Then the whole thing turned gray and spread all over the sky.
そのとき、すべてのものが、灰色になり、空全体に広がりました。
The sun, which I looked up at through the cloud, was the color of something dead.
私が雲を通して見上げた太陽は、死の色でした。
I saw lots of black smoke coming from the other side of the mountain.
私は、山の反対側から多量の煙がやってくるのを見ました。
My brother said, "Urakami's been hit!"
弟が言った。「浦上がやられた!」
After a little while, the cicadas began to sing again.
少しの間の後、せみは、再び鳴き始めました。
Fujie, Sadako, and Ritsuko came along in the evening.
藤江と聡子と律子が晩に一緒にやってきました。
I asked, "where is Mom? Is she coming later?"
私は聞いた。「お母さんはどこ?後から来ますか?」
Fujie didn't answer but just took me in her arms and cried and cried.
藤江は答えませんでしたが、ただ、腕に私を抱き、泣きました。
I couldn't understand why Mom didn't come with the tempura and the manju.
私は、なぜ母がてんぷらと饅頭と来てくれなかったか理解できませんでした。
But the tempura and the manju were not what I really cared about.
しかし、てんぷらと饅頭は、私が本当に心配したことではありませんでした
I just wanted to be with Mom again.
私はただ、母と再び一緒にいたかっただけです。
Fujie said, "Everybody's dead, everybody."
藤江が言った。「みんな死んだの。みんな。」

Part4

Two days later, Dad came along at last.
二日後、ついに父がやってきました。
What a sight he was!
なんて彼はひどい様子なのでしょう!
His head was all wrapped in bandages, which were stiff from dried blood.
彼の頭はすべて乾いた血によって固まった包帯で巻かれていました。
His clothes were also stiff from dried blood.
彼の衣服も乾いた血によって固まっていました。
His face was pale, and his eyes were glaring!
彼の顔は青ざめていて、彼の目はにらみつけていた。
My brother and I were afraid to go near him.
弟と私は父に近づくのを恐れていました。
My brother was so shocked that he let go of the cicada that he was holding.
弟はショックを受け、持っていたせみを逃がしてしまいました。
Lots of doctors and nurses were with Dad, who was a doctor, too.
多くの医者と看護士が医者である父と共にいました。
The house was filled with with the smell of medicine.
家が薬のにおいで満たされました。
After they took a short rest, they all went out to treat wounded people.
彼らは少しの休憩をとった後、みな、負傷した人々の治療のため出かけました。
There were so many, many wounded people in and around Urakami, the doctors and nurses said.
「とても多くの負傷した人々が浦上の内外にいる。」医者と看護士が言いました。
What had looked like a red pillar sticking up into the sky had killed and wounded lots and lots of people, Dad said.
「空へ上っている赤い柱のように見える何かが人を殺し、多くの人を傷つけた。」父が言った。
He said it was not an ordinary cloud but that it was an atomic cloud.
彼はそれが普通の雲ではなく、原子雲だといいました。
Ritsuko died.
律子は死にました。
Before she died, she coughed up alot of blood.
彼女が死ぬ前、多くの血が出ました。
Every day lots of people died everywhere.
毎日、多くの人々がどこかで死にました。

Part5

Later that year, there was a big funeral service for the people who had died.
年に暮れに、死んでしまった人のための大きな葬儀がありました。
It was held on the grounds of the Tenshudo, which itself had been ruined.
それは天主堂の広場で開かれました。しかし、天主堂自体そのものは破壊されてしまいました。
The relatives of the dead held white crosses, 8,000 in all.
なくなった人たちの親類は白い十字架を全部で8,000本立てました。
I held a cross with Mom's name on it.
私は母の名前をそれに乗せ立てました。
The number of white crosses was larger than the number of people present at the service, which made everyone cry.
白い十字架の数は式に出席していた人の数よりも多かった。式はみなを泣かせました。。
After the service we visited Mom's grave.
式の後、私たちは母の墓をたずねました。
On the grave there was a little stone which Dad had put there.
墓の上に父がおいた少量の石がありました。
We set up the white cross I had carried at the funeral service.
私たちは葬儀のとき運んできた白い十字架をセットアップしました。
That happened four years ago.
それは4年前に起こりました。
Dad has been sick in bed ever since.
父はそれ以来ベッドで病気になってしまいました。
He has lost a lot of weight.
彼はとても体重が減った。
He is so thin now, but I am getting very big and tall.
彼は今、細いですが、私はとても大きく、高くなっています。
Mom's grave does not get any bigger or any smaller.
母の墓は大きくも小さくもどちらにもなっていません。
Whenever I visit her, the stone and the cross just stand there.
私が母を訪ねるときはいつも、石と十字架がそこにたっています。
Now I can read what Dad wrote on the cross four years ago.
今、私は4年前に十字架の上に父が書いた文字を読むことができます。
