1. 先カンブリア紀から中新世までの地層に幾つかの隕石が見つかっている[Matson 1994; Schmitz et al. 1997]。5億年前の隕石衝突によってオルドビス紀中期の隕石率の増加したという証拠がある。オロドビス紀の石灰岩のひとつの採石場から40個以上の隕石の化石が見つかっている[Schmitz et al. 2003]。さらに、多くの衝突クレーターや衝突の証拠が見つかっている。
